The Block Printing Process: A Work of Art

The block printing process is a labour of love, from the meticulous preparation to the final creation of these beautiful designs. Here's a glimpse into the steps involved:

Tools: Skilled artisans hand-chisel wooden blocks into the desired patterns. A separate block is crafted for each colour, demanding precision to ensure they layer perfectly in the finished design. Complex designs often require the use of brass blocks to achieve the desired intricacy.

Fabric: The chosen fabric undergoes a multi-step treatment, including washing and drying, with the exact duration varying depending on the fabric type and the specific dye method selected. Once prepared, the fabric is meticulously pinned tautly on a cushioned printing table. The length of block printing for continuous fabric is directly linked to the length of these tables.

Colour: Dyes are thoughtfully mixed by hand and rigorously tested against master samples. Approved dyes are poured into trays, and layers of fabric are inserted to create a surface for dipping. The type and quantity of fabric layers used depend on the intricacy of the block design. Cloth layering is often adjusted when switching designs to meet the specific requirements of each block.

Printing: The printer carefully lowers the block into the dye tray, ensuring just enough colour covers its surface, and the printing process begins. The block is placed on the fabric with one hand, and a firm yet swift press with the other hand transfers the colour onto the material. Guide marks are meticulously incorporated into each block, anchoring each subsequent print to assist the artisans in their work. The meticulous and repeated application of the block creates the complete design. Precision is of the utmost importance, as a single mistake can alter the entire piece.
